Let me tell you about a man I knew

Nobody knows the name of the painter that has arrived to the Monastery in Saint-Rémy,  which has become an assylum for the troubled mind.

However, soon gossip about the painter savage red hair and the story of his severed ear fills the talking of the women in the market of the village. As you soon see, the painter is not other than Vincent Van Gogh.

After the turbulent life with Gaughin, who is accused of sending Vincent to madness, he looks for refuge in the French countryside.

Jeanne Trabuc is the wife of the warden of the assylum. Although she knows that entiring the hospital is prohibited , she feels attracted by the painter, who leads her to start questioning her life, to try to understand the world from a diferent perspective.

His full-of-painted overalls, his erratic behaviour, his troubled and intense personality, change the life in the asylum, This is the time of a prolific production, being the most famour painting that he paints there  'The starry Night', which has been reproduced to the infinitum.

The power of this narrative is centred in the portray of the life of this woman, who gradually becomes more aware of her own world and the possible lives she could have had if she had taken other actions. Vincent is the the background. However, his presence is imposible to shade, his influence in Jeanne powerful and unforgettable.

La séptima función del Lenguaje (Laurent Binnet)

La séptima función del lenguaje

El escritor fránces Laurent Binnet toma la muerte del pensador Roland Barthes, quien fue atropellado por un auto el 25 de febrero de 1980,  luego de haber almorzado con el opositor Mitterand, como el comienzo de esta novela.

Sin embargo, el autor se pregunta si en realidad el pensador fue asesinado. El detective conservador  Jacques Bayard se une a el profesor de semiología Simon Herzog a desentrañar la verdad sobre el hecho.

La narrativa se llena de personajes de la semiología y el pensamiento estructuralista y post-estucturalista, quienes se presentan en el desarrollo de la historia. Kristeva, Levi-Strauss, Jakobson, Althuser, Lacan, Foucalt e incluso Umberto Eco son investigados, todos con motivos para obtener los documentos que Barthes llevaba la noche de su muerte.

Lo que todos buscan es 'La séptima función del lenguaje' descrita por Jakobson, la cual explica que aquel que la conozca podrá convencer a cualquier persona de  hacer cualquier cosa en cualquier circunstancia, teniendo el mundo a sus pies. 

Los investigadores se moverán en diversos ambientes, desde un sauna gay poblado de gigolos, hasta las reuniones secretas de pensadores, donde a función será puesta a prueba.

Una historia de detectives llena de giros y pensamiento inquisitivo, que llevará al lector a Paris para recorrer junto a los investigadores sus calles y sus avenidas, buscando la verdad.

The Anatomy Lesson

A single day in 1632. This is the story behind Rembrandt's famous painting called like the title of the novel, the medical dissection done by Dr. Tulp.

The story is narrated from different perspectives by an omninscient narrator, retelling the lives of the different characters that were touched by the creation of this piece of art.

The chapters are divided into the already mentioned sections. The eyes displays Rembrandt's ideas about the assigment asked by the doctor, which arise doubts and moral issues to the painter.

The hands portrays Dr. Tulp's anticipation towards this event that could change the story of medicine, positioning him in the possibility to become a mastermind in the realm of the sciences.

The body presents the day of Aris The Kid, the petty robber that is condemn to be hanged and whose body is going to be dissected by Dr. Tulp. Although his crimes are not important enough for him being condemned, the necessity of having a body for the event make his death inevitable.

The heart displays Aris The Kid's lover Flora, who is pregnant carrying his baby although they were not married. Her house is stoned by the neighbourhood children, as the town called her a witch. She is going to try to save Aris, or at least to recover his body to give him Christian burial.

The mouth is the section that portrays the life of Fetchet, the man that is in charged of getting bodies fro the doctors of the city. He also tries to get  extravagant  animals and objects for painters such as Rembrandt, for their paintings.

The mind is the presentation of Descartes's thoughts as the doctor asked him to witness the dissection and to share his ideas with him. Descartes is trying to find where the human soul is, anxiously expecting that Dostor Tulp's work will give him some answers.

This is a novel that the reader has to build following the different lines of the plot, enjoying the complex features of the characters and the astounding display of the city of Amsterdam. This story narrates the behind-the-scenes of  the creation of a masterpiece that will be admired through the centuries.

"La memoria es un paisaje contemplado desde un tren en movimiento"

La memoria ocupa un lugar central en los dos títulos de este escritor de Angola. Como esta cita explica, el pasado es un confuso conjunto de imágenes que pueden ser reales o no, una simple creación de nuestra imaginación para recordarnos como mejores personas.

En "El Vendedor de Pasados", un particular narrador relata la vida de Félix, un albino que, a través de certificados de nacimientos, fotos en sepia y objetos antiguos, crea un nuevo pasado para sus clientes. Cuando uno de ellos comienza a vivir su pasado ficticio, buscando parientes y visitando lugares donde su familia vivió, la trama toma un giro inesperado. 

El amor por Ángela Lucía llena los días de Félix. Ella es una fotógrafa que ha recorrido el mundo tomando fotografías de la luz que se evidencia en el cielo, destacando los de Río de Janeiro, París y Londres. 

.

En "Teoría general del Olvido", Ludovica vive aterrada del afuera, manteniéndose dentro de su casa desde su adolescencia. Cuando su hermana y su esposo desaparecen y la lucha por la independencia en Angola se vuelve sangrienta y extremadamente peligrosa, ella levanta una pared, encerrándose en su departamento. Veremos como con practicidad y sentido común, ella pasa sus días en su hogar y en la azotea, donde planta diferentes vegetales y hasta cría gallinas.

 Con el tiempo el escritor introduce una serie de personajes que están en ambos bandos de la lucha, buscando sobrevivir al caos y la violencia que depara cada día en la ciudad. Con personajes complejos llevando la narración a sus perspectivas historias, el lector debe ir conectando las diferentes situaciones que a simple vista parecen casuales para construir la historia sin pausa . En cada página hay un nuevo giro narrativo,  que sorprenderá, demostrando la capacidad de Agualusa para general esta maravillosa novela.

Agualusa ha sido nominado a diferentes premios internacionales, entre ellos, el Man Booker Internacional en el año 2016. Hay muchas más novelas suyas que aun no han sido traducidas al español. Ellas nos esperan para sorprendernos y llevarnos a Angola, a su historia y sus habitantes, narraciones inolvidables que nos dejaran sin aliento.

Almudena Grandes esta dedicándose a explorar y mostrar los que ella llama 'los supervivientes' de la guerra civil española y las posguerra, durante la cual los perdedores fueron castigados por su pasado.

En esta novela, una trama para sacar a los criminales de guerra alemanes, quienes pueden vivir en España o mudarse a Sudamérica, siendo protegidos por el gobierno español es mostrada abiertamente, criminales que vivían a plena luz del día, mientras eran nombrados como los mas buscados por los gobiernos aliados.

Esta es una historia de espías, donde los protagonistas toman diferentes identidades para salvar sus vidas o infiltrase en la secreta organización que salva a los ya nombrados criminales. Puede ser leida independiente de las anteriores novelas 'Ines y la Alegría', 'El lector de Julio Verne' y 'Las tres bodas de Manolita'.

Una historia que muestra como las acciones del gobierno español eran toleradas por los gobiernos aliados, quienes estaban al tanto de la protección a los criminales de guerra, de las atrocidades vividas por los republicanos en las prisiones y la desolación de las viudas y los hijos de los hombres presos. También muestra como preferían que España fuera gobernada por una dictadura, aunque fuera ilegal, que permitir que los socialistas, cercanos ala gobierno de Moscú, tener el control.

Una novela esencial para conocer la asociación entre el gobierno alemán de Hitler y la dictadura de Franco, para conocer la vida de la derecha en las ciudades como Madrid, quienes permanecían indiferentes a la moral y los valores de la humanidad.

The protagonist Michel returns to his hometwon in South Africa because of the death of his mother. From the beginning, his journey back through the countryside represents an opportunity to enjoy the fruitful lanscapes towards the farm of his family, beatifully displayed by the author.

Living in USA, as he meets with his past, we learn the circumstances why he fled his country. Now everything is changed. Apartheid has been finished years ago, however, the relationship between the white Afrikaneers and the black people has not improved,

His disabled father is waiting for him, their relationship never been good. Many of the black workers of the farm help him to continue his life but with the death of the mother everything becomes precaurious.

Truths about his brother Peet's death and his own departure from the country come to light when all the members of the family reunite in the farm: Benjamin, the middle son, the only who has followed the father's wishes; Karien, Michel's ex-lover, being present as an icon of teenage love; Loreto, the black girl who achieves more than what has been expected of her.

Berh portrays these complex characters under an unique light, with every flaw they have, and with the right and wrong decisions they have made, being as young as they were when Michel escaped  South Africa.

With a creative use of the language, the plot surrepticiouly unfolds in front of the readers, allowing them to build the story, putting each piece in the correct place, like a jigzaw puzzle.

An intimate novel,it explores the dilemas people face when dealing with complicated family's structures, when race is a scent nobody can be ridden of, when History introduces itself and plays with the lives of those who are just trying to beat their destiny.
