Do not say we have nothing (Madeleine Thien)

Do not say we have nothing

Madeleine Thien

The novel tells the story of two generations by the meeting of two young women, Marie, a Canadian-Chinese, and Ai-Ming, a Chinese who is seeking for refugee asylum. Ai-Ming has escaped from China because she has taken part in the Tiananmen Square protesting.

Marie's father Kai and Ai-Ming's father Sparrow were companions in the university. Both musicians, they suffered Mao's  Cultural Revolution. Together with a violin prodigy Zhuli they would have to reinterpret their compositions for the principles of the Comunist Party.

Marie has been trying to discover her father's past, who has left his family. By picking up pieces, she is struggling to understand her father' personality and wishes.

By telling the story of these two generations, Thien represents the changes in the History of China, which engulfed people's lives and destroyed their uniqueness.
