This novel takes place in regions as different as Old Delhi and the mountains and valleys of Kashmir.

The story starts when a mother discovers that her son has also female genitalia. With time, as he grows up, he, taking the name of Anjum, decides to live with a group of hirajs, men who dress like women and entertaint other men. Roy dwells in the everyday life of this women, how they are accepted by society as members of their communities. Anjum decides to move to the cemetery and by chance,she ends up with a baby that she nurses as if she is her own.

Then the author introduces Tilo and her story with  Musa, an ex-lover, who is fighting in Kashmir. She visites him and suddenly a shocking event happens to both of them. In this part, Roy presents her political ideas about India-Pakistan conflict and the human righs movement she takes part in.

In the graveyard, Anjun creates a kind community for outsiders and all together they raise the baby. Tilo appears later there, enclosing all the stories in one.
