Middle Grade Reads

                                                         Clockwork (Philip Pullman)

This illustrated novel narrates the interwoven stories of four characters: Karl, the apprentice of the clockmaker; Gretl, the daughter of the innkeeper, Fritz, a local writer and the young prince Florian.

Fritz starts telling a story while Karl feels miserable because he is unable to produce a new figure for the clock of the town.

When a sinister character from Fritz's story appears in the inn, the story takes a fantastical twist in which fiction and reality become one.

Pullman gives a dark tone to the plot as well as to the setting, creating a thriller that is imposible to put down.

The Year Down Yonder (Richard Peck)

Mary Alice, a 15-year-old, and her family are suffering the Great Depression in Chicago. As a way to save some money, she is sent with her grandma. However, her grandm

a is not an old nice lady.

She complains about everything, swears and fights with the neighbours. She is even feared by the kids of the town.

Going through a lot of adventures, like starting a tractor and crashing it against a tree to get the pecans that fall from it, both of them end accepting each other's flaws.

Peck's way of presenting the characters and the setting makes them come alive in the imagination of its readers, leading them to the past and to the countryside.
